Nigeria Shines at African Games, Dominating Ghana and Finishing Second Behind Egypt

Nigeria put on a strong showing at the 13th African Games held in Ghana, clinching the second-place position on the medals table, which saw their arch-rival Ghana unable to crack top 5. While Egypt dominated with a total of 189 medals, Nigeria secured an impressive 120 medals (47 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze) across 25 different sports.

Weightlifting proved to be Nigeria’s golden goose, bringing in the highest number of medals (32) with a strong showing of 16 golds. Athletics followed closely with 22 medals.

Individual performances were equally impressive. Tobi Amusan continued her reign, winning her third consecutive gold in the women’s 100m hurdles and leading the 4x100m relay team to victory. Ese Brume defended her long jump title, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi triumphed in the men’s shot put. Wrestling also saw Nigerian dominance with Blessing Oborududu and Odunayo Adekuoroye securing a combined 11 medals. Boxing added eight golds to the national tally, and arm wrestling contributed 13 medals as well.

While Egypt maintained their top position, Nigeria’s performance solidified their place as a major sporting force in Africa and yet again, showing their dominance over their West African neighbors Ghana who finished sixth on the medals table. The next African Games in 2027 will be held in Cairo, Egypt, where both teams will likely continue their strong rivalry.
