Chibok Girls Remembered in New Film "Statues Also Breathe.

A new documentary, “Statues Also Breathe,” premiered at the Nordic Hotel in Lagos to remember the Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in 2014. The film coincides with the 10th anniversary of the kidnapping.

Amina Ali, a survivor who escaped captivity, attended the screening along with community members. The film documents the creation of 108 terracotta sculptures representing the missing girls.

The 17-minute documentary captures the artistic process and the heartbreak of families. Mothers reflected on lost traditions and the pain of their daughters’ absence. One scene depicts a mother hesitant to see the sculpted face, fearing the memories it evokes.

In April 2014, Boko Haram militants abducted over 276 girls from a school in Chibok. While some escaped or were rescued, many remain missing.

Amina Ali and Jummai Mutah, both survivors, spoke at the screening about their experiences. Jummai expressed hope that the film will raise awareness and support for those still affected by the insurgency. She also spoke of her resilience during captivity, finding solace in her Bible.

Amina recounted her escape and the month she spent wandering in the forest with her child.

The film serves as a powerful tribute to the missing girls and a testament to the courage of the survivors.
