Nigerian Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr, known for hits like “Bloody Samaritan” and “Rush”, spoke about her rapid rise to stardom and her ever-evolving sound in a recent interview on Visa’s “Music Talks.”

Starr rose to prominence in 2021 with her debut EP and album, “19 & Dangerous.” Since then, she’s emphasized the unique experience of growing up in the spotlight. “My first single blew up in Africa and I was overwhelmed,” she said. “We need to allow artists to grow and find themselves. So I don’t even know if this is my final form yet, but I don’t think there’s any such thing.”

Starr remains focused on artistic growth. “There’s eras and times and you just become better,” she said. “This is the vibe now with Ayra Starr, it might not be there next year. It might be better, it might be bigger.”

Looking beyond Afrobeats, Starr credits her global appeal to her unique voice and ability to blend genres. “Different people from different parts of the world love my music,” she said. “My voice is kind of my sound. I bring the Afrobeats to every genre I enter.”

The singer also revealed an impressive anecdote about her first meeting with record label executive Don Jazzy, who signed her to Mavin Records. “I recorded five songs the first day I met Don Jazzy,” she said. “Three of those ended up in my first EP.”
