Nigeria’s Happiness Ranking Drops in World Happiness Report.

Nigeria's ranking in the World Happiness Report 2024

Nigeria’s ranking in the World Happiness Report 2024 has fallen seven spots compared to the previous year, placing it 102nd globally. While Finland held onto the top spot for the seventh year in a row, Libya emerged as Africa’s happiest nation, ranking 66th worldwide.

There’s no dedicated Africa list in the report, but Libya’s higher global ranking makes it Africa’s leader in happiness. Other African countries surpassed Nigeria in the rankings, including Mauritius, South Africa, Algeria, Congo, Mozambique, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Guinea, and Senegal.

This report, released annually on the International Day of Happiness (March 20th), is a collaboration between Gallup, the University of Oxford, and the UN. It assesses happiness through surveys asking nearly 1,000 people in various countries to evaluate their current life satisfaction based on factors like income, social support, health expectancy, freedom, generosity, and levels of perceived corruption.

While Nigeria’s ranking dropped, it remains happier than several other African nations, including Cameroon, Namibia, Morocco, South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Gambia, Chad, Kenya, Tunisia, Benin, Uganda, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Madagascar, Togo, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
