Nigerian Singer Blackface Levels New Copyright Accusation Against Shallipopi.

Nigerian Singer Blackface Levels New Copyright Accusation Against Shallipopi.

Veteran Nigerian singer Blackface, formerly of Plantashun Boiz fame, is embroiled in another copyright controversy. This time, Blackface alleges that rising artist Shallipopi infringed on his intellectual property by sampling a portion of Blackface’s song “Enemy Plan” in Shallipopi’s recent debut album “Shakepopi”.

Taking to Instagram, Blackface vented his frustration in a video post, questioning if contemporary artists are incapable of creating music without resorting to copying his sound or melodies. In a playful jab, Blackface offered to create a remix for Shallipopi, ironically suggesting the newcomer abandon his current project.

This accusation is just the latest in a string of copyright claims Blackface has levied against his fellow musicians. Most notably, Blackface was locked in a long-standing battle with his former bandmate 2Baba over ownership of the global smash hit “African Queen,” which Blackface insists he co-wrote during their Plantashun Boiz days. The dispute eventually resulted in Blackface receiving songwriting credits for the song.

Blackface’s copyright claims have extended beyond his former band. In 2023, he accused Wizkid of plagiarizing elements from his song “Twist & Turn” in Wizkid’s hit “Ginger” featuring Burna Boy. Blackface has also targeted artists like Asake and Olamide, alleging they respectively copied his songs “Ikebe Supper” and “Killer” in their own tracks “Joha” and “Don’t Stop”. Shallipopi has yet to respond to Blackface’s latest accusation.
