Dumelo Supports NDC Position on Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, Sparks Debate Over Past 'Gay' Role in Film.

Actor and politician John Setor Dumelo has stirred controversy on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), with his remarks concerning the contentious “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” commonly known as the “anti-gay bill.”

Critics online have accused the actor and aspiring parliamentarian of displaying ambivalence regarding the issue.

The bill, presently under deliberation in Ghana’s Parliament and awaiting presidential endorsement, has drawn criticism both domestically and internationally due to apprehensions about potential human rights violations.

During a recent interview on Star FM, Dumelo indicated his alignment with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s stance on the bill, stressing the party’s commitment to safeguarding “family values” in Ghana. However, he refrained from explicitly stating his position, citing a respect for individual privacy.

Nevertheless, Dumelo’s comments have triggered online backlash, with users pointing out his previous portrayal of a gay character in the 2010 Nigerian film “Men In Love.” The movie portrays a couple grappling with marital issues, complicated by the introduction of a gay friend under a curse.

The actor’s statements have sparked discussions on social media, with users expressing varying opinions on his stance and past roles.

These discussions underscore the sensitivity and complexity of LGBTQ+ rights and legislative matters in Ghana, highlighting broader debates on human rights and societal values.
