My Dad Never Got Credit For Co-writing The Nigerian National Anthem – Veteran Singer, Eddy Remedy.

My Dad Never Got Credit For Co-writing The Nigerian National Anthem – Veteran Singer, Eddy Remedy.

In a recent interview with Daddy Freeze, Eddy Remedy, the veteran singer and former member of The Remedies, revealed a surprising family connection to the creation of the Nigerian national anthem. According to Eddy Remedy, his father, Ashiedu Brown, a retired police officer and former member of the Nigeria Police Band, was one of the contributors to the composition of the national anthem. However, despite his significant role, all the credit for the anthem was officially attributed to his boss, Benedict Elise Odiase, who served as the director of the band.

Eddy Remedy expressed his disappointment in the lack of recognition accorded to his father for his contribution to the national anthem. He asserted that his father, to this day, has not received any national honour for his involvement in crafting the anthem. This oversight has left Eddy Remedy questioning the fairness and acknowledgment of individuals who played pivotal roles in shaping the country’s symbols and identity.

The singer further disclosed that his father’s disheartening experience influenced his opposition to Eddy Remedy’s pursuit of a musical career. Eddy Remedy believes that his father’s lack of recognition and reward for his contribution to the national anthem served as a deterrent, with his father anticipating a similar fate for his son in the music industry. Eddy Remedy expressed his understanding of his father’s reservations, stating, “Now I understand why my dad didn’t want me to do music. Because they did the same thing to him.”

This revelation sheds light on the potential oversight and lack of acknowledgment faced by unsung heroes who played integral roles in shaping Nigeria’s cultural and national heritage. Eddy Remedy’s story highlights the need for a reevaluation of historical credits to ensure that deserving individuals receive the recognition they rightfully deserve.
