Radio Refuses To Play Beyoncé's Music, Then Succumbs To Racism Accusations.

After facing criticism for refusing to play a listener’s Beyoncé request, citing its identity as a “country music station,” a US radio station has changed its tune. KYKC-FM, located in Oklahoma, had been accused of “racism and discrimination” by the disappointed fan, who shared the station’s response on social media.

The post gained widespread attention, reaching millions of views and being shared by the fan account @BeyLegion. Following the backlash, the station’s manager acknowledged Beyoncé as an “icon” and revealed that the Texan singer’s song “Texas Hold ‘Em,” released during the Super Bowl ads, is now part of the station’s country music playlist. This decision also extends to two other stations overseen by South Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises.

In a statement to CBS News, Roger Harris, the general manager, explained that the station was unaware of Beyoncé’s new country music releases. He clarified that the initial response to the fan was a “standard reply,” as KYKC typically does not play her music due to its small size and lack of access to major labels.

After numerous requests flooded in, the station tracked down the song and recognized its country sound. Harris emphasized that KYKC harbors no ill will towards Beyoncé, expressing support for artists breaking free from genre constraints. The station’s renewed openness to diverse music was highlighted in a post made four hours after the initial complaint, announcing the imminent play of “Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em,” which has rapidly garnered over nine million plays on Spotify and more than 900,000 views on YouTube since its recent release.
