April Fools’ Day, celebrated on April 1st each year, is a day dedicated to playing pranks and practical jokes on friends, family, and colleagues. The origins of April Fools’ Day are uncertain, with several theories attempting to explain its history.

One popular theory traces the tradition back to the late 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as ordered by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1st. However, with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, New Year’s Day moved to January 1st. Some people either refused to accept the new date or remained unaware of the change and continued to celebrate the New Year during the last week of March through April 1st.
