KFC Branch at Lagos Airport Shut Down for Denying Entry to Passenger in Wheelchair.

KFC Branch at Lagos Airport Shut Down for Denying Entry to Passenger in Wheelchair.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has closed a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) following a social media complaint alleging discrimination against a passenger with reduced mobility.

The incident, which sparked outrage online, involved Debola Daniel, son of a former governor, who reported being denied entry to the restaurant with his family due to his wheelchair. The KFC staff reportedly stated “no wheelchairs allowed.”

FAAN launched a swift investigation upon receiving the report and confirmed the passenger’s account. Citing a Lagos State law prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities, FAAN officials ordered the KFC branch shut down effective March 28th, 2024.

“We take such allegations very seriously,” said Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection. “Our airports are open to everyone, and discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated.”

In addition to the closure, FAAN has demanded a written apology from KFC management to the affected passenger and a clear policy statement against discrimination displayed prominently at the restaurant before it can reopen.

FAAN also issued an apology to Mr. Daniel and reassured all airport users of their commitment to protecting passenger rights. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in public spaces.
