Streams For Heartbreak Songs Increased Massively On Valentine – Spotify.

Spotify has revealed a surprising trend this Valentine’s Day: Nigerian men are leading the way in streaming heartbreak songs.

According to Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, streams of heartbreak songs in Nigeria have surged by a staggering 626 percent between 2022 and 2024.

“Nigerians are turning to their playlists to express their emotions, with a staggering 626 percent overall growth in heartbreak streams from 2022 to 2024,” Okumu said. “This Valentine, the sound of love is accompanied by the sound of heartbreak, and the data shows it’s louder than ever before.”

Surprisingly, the data shows that men are streaming these songs at a significantly higher rate than women, with a 362 percent increase compared to 169 percent among women. “This could suggest that men resonate with the feeling of heartbreak more and turn to music as a private outlet for processing emotions,” Okumu observed.

This Valentine’s Day, Nigerians will join the world in celebrating love, but Spotify’s data reveals that heartbreak is a significant undercurrent, especially for men.
