Onyeka Onwenu was a legendary Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, and activist, often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion” due to her commanding presence and influential career. Born on January 31, 1952, in Arondizuogu, Imo State, Onwenu emerged as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s music industry, blending genres like highlife, reggae, and pop to create powerful songs that addressed social and political issues.
Beyond music, Onwenu made significant contributions to human rights activism. In 1984, she released a documentary titled “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches,” which highlighted the corruption and environmental degradation in Nigeria’s oil-rich regions, profoundly influencing public perception and policy.
She Passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72. She collapsed after performing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, and was taken to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was pronounced dead.
