S2Kizzy and Master J: Bongo Flava Dreams Now Come with a Price Tag, Sh50 Million and Rising.
Legendary Tanzanian Bongo Flava producer Master J has revealed the staggering financial realities of breaking into the Tanzanian music scene.
In a recent interview, Master J emphasized that music has evolved beyond mere talent; it’s now a full-fledged business requiring substantial investment. “If you want to take music seriously, Sh10 million won’t cut it,” he stated, explaining that a single song can easily cost between Sh50 million and Sh100 million to produce and promote effectively.
This sentiment was echoed by fellow Tanzanian musician S2Kizzy, who highlighted the rising costs of music production, including high-quality music videos and TikTok influencer campaigns, which can cost up to Sh5 million per campaign.
Music video director Deo Abel further emphasized the financial constraints facing aspiring artists. He explained that without adequate funding, artists struggle to afford essential services like creative direction, music registration, distribution, and effective marketing campaigns.
This stark reality underscores the need for aspiring Bongo Flava artists to approach their careers with a solid business plan and a significant financial investment. While the costs may seem daunting, they reflect the evolving landscape of the music industry, where competition is fierce and strategic planning is crucial for success.
