We’re constantly immersed in international pop culture, new technology, and the allure of the “next big thing.” However, there’s a vital part of our identity that shouldn’t be left behind: our history, which defines who we are, connects us to our ancestors, and shapes our future.

Nigerian history is a tapestry woven with the stories of ancient kingdoms, colonial struggles, independence, and the colorful diversity of over 250 ethnic groups. Each tribe, each language, and each tradition has a story that deserves to be passed down to future generations. But if we fail to prioritize these stories, they risk being forgotten or misunderstood by the coming generations.

Take, for example, the history of the Benin Empire a powerful and sophisticated kingdom that contributed significantly to global arts and governance. Or the rich tales of the Yoruba Oyo Empire, known for its impressive military and political system. Many young Nigerians know only fragments of these histories, often distorted by Western narratives or reduced to footnotes in school textbooks. Our past deserves better.

Understanding our history isn’t just about memorizing dates and events; it’s about embracing our values, our resilience, and our innovations. When we neglect our past, we lose the chance to understand the sacrifices of our forefathers and the wisdom embedded in our traditions. A generation that lacks knowledge of its history risks losing its identity, leaving behind a hollow legacy.

Moreover, prioritizing history allows us to reshape the narrative. By taking control of our historical narrative, we can tell our stories with authenticity, pride, and a true understanding of our identity. This shift enables us to celebrate heroes like Queen Amina, Obafemi Awolowo, and Chinua Achebe not just as figures of the past but as icons whose legacies continue to shape our aspirations and dreams.

One way to keep Nigerian history alive is by embracing digital media. Through blogs, podcasts, social media, and documentaries, we can share historical knowledge in formats that appeal to today’s youth. Local museums, schools, and community organizations should collaborate to create engaging programs that bring history to life, making it relevant for the modern Nigerian.

Let this article be a call to action for all Nigerians, especially the youth, to embrace our history before it fades into oblivion.
