In a surprising turn of events, the Nollywood film “What About Us?” directed by Kayode Kasum, has claimed the top spot at Nigeria’s box office, overtaking Hollywood’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The locally produced film has captivated audiences, grossing a total of ₦34.7 million since its release.

Since the beginning of July, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, had dominated the Nigerian box office. However, “What About Us?” broke this streak, earning an impressive ₦24 million in its first weekend alone. According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), the film now leads the charts from July 12 to July 18, 2024.

The star-studded cast of “What About Us?” includes prominent Nollywood actors such as Uzor Arukwe, Folu Storms, Kunle Remi, Teniola Aladese, Seyi Awolowo, Marycolette Unamka, and Atlanta Bridget Johnson. This ensemble has undoubtedly contributed to the film’s overwhelming success and popularity among Nigerian audiences.

Meanwhile, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has dropped to second place with a total gross of ₦33.6 million. Following closely is the Hollywood horror sci-fi film “A Quiet Place: Day One,” written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, which secured the third spot with ₦30.3 million, bringing its total earnings to ₦109.2 million.

Other notable entries in the top ten include Odunlade Adekola’s Nollywood epic crime thriller “Lakatabu,” which grossed ₦22.1 million, and the American animated comedy “Despicable Me 4,” which earned ₦13.8 million last week. These films continue to draw significant attention, showcasing the diverse tastes of Nigerian moviegoers.
