DumsorMustStop Protest Gets Green Light as Ghana Police Withdraw Court Block.
Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson and her team can breathe a sigh of relief as their planned #DumsorMustStop protest on Saturday, May 25th, will go ahead. The Ghana Police Service, which had initially sought a court order to halt the demonstration, withdrew their application after reaching an agreement with the organizers regarding the protest route.
The move comes after weeks of back-and-forth between the organizers and the police. The police, citing security concerns, had filed an application on May 20th requesting a court order to block the protest entirely. Their concerns stemmed from the planned route’s endpoint, Revolution Square, which is located close to Jubilee House, a designated security zone. Additionally, the police had reservations about the protest’s late-night schedule.
However, negotiations proved successful, with the organizers agreeing to adjust their route in a way that addressed the police’s security concerns. On Friday, May 24th, during a court hearing, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo acknowledged the withdrawal request by the Ghana Police Service and dismissed the case. This paves the way for the #DumsorMustStop protest to proceed as planned.
The demonstration is aimed at highlighting the ongoing issue of intermittent power cuts, known locally as ‘dumsor’. Nelson, who spearheaded a similar protest in 2015, has been vocal about the negative impact of dumsor on her business and the lives of Ghanaians.
