Popular Nigerian singer Seyi Vibez has revealed a cautionary tale from his early days in music, highlighting the dangers of online scams targeting aspiring artists. During a recent interview on Wazobia FM Lagos, Vibez recounted how his youthful ambition to join Wizkid’s record label, Starboy Entertainment, unfortunately landed him in the crosshairs of fraudsters.

In his pursuit of a shot at stardom, Vibez, then just 13 years old, turned to the internet for guidance. He naively searched online for ways to connect with Starboy and stumbled upon a phone number. Believing it to be a legitimate contact, Vibez made the call, only to be connected with a scammer posing as a Starboy recruitment officer. The smooth-talking criminal convinced Vibez that paying N10,000 for a registration form was the necessary first step towards getting signed by the label. Eager and trusting, Vibez sold his phone to raise the money, only to be abruptly cut off from communication after sending the payment. The scammer vanished, leaving Vibez heartbroken and empty-handed.

Emerging from this experience, Vibez is now using his platform to warn aspiring musicians. He emphasizes the importance of caution when dealing with online contacts claiming to represent record labels. “Don’t sign up for any record label online,” Vibez advised, urging young artists to seek legitimate channels and avoid falling prey to similar scams. Vibez’s story serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance needed in the music industry, particularly for those just starting their careers. It highlights the importance of reliable information and responsible connections when navigating the often-tricky world of getting signed.
