Medikal Faces GH¢15 Million Lawsuit from Alabaster Box Over Alleged “Akwaaba” Sampling.

Ghanaian rapper Medikal is embroiled in a legal battle with music group Alabaster Box, who are suing him for GH¢15 million over the alleged unauthorized sampling of their popular song “Akwaaba.” The lawsuit follows Alabaster Box’s public accusation on April 8, 2025, demanding the removal of Medikal’s track “Welcome to Africa” from all platforms and a full revenue account.
Alabaster Box filed a writ of summons on April 15, 2025, seeking GH¢10 million in general damages for copyright infringement and an additional GH¢5 million in exemplary damages, citing Medikal’s “intentional infringement,” alleged association of their brand with “vulgarity,” and diminishing the value of their copyrighted work. The group also seeks legal costs.
According to the writ, Alabaster Box claims that the first ten seconds of Medikal’s “Welcome to Africa” directly sample their 2002 hit “Akwaaba” without permission. They further allege that despite their initial demands, Medikal only edited the YouTube version of the song, while the allegedly infringing version remains on other streaming platforms and continues to receive radio airplay, constituting a “continuing infringement.”
